Flying With a Gas Bubble in Your Eye: What You Need to Know

Travel may not be the first thing on your mind after retinal surgery, but if you have a trip coming up, it's worth discussing with your retina specialist. Certain retinal procedures involve placing a gas bubble inside the eye to support the retina as it heals, and while that bubble remains, flying can be dangerous. At higher altitudes, changes in atmospheric pressure can cause the gas inside your eye to expand, potentially raising eye pressure to dangerous levels. While this restriction is temporary, following it is critical to protecting your vision as your eye heals. Here's what you need to know about flying with a gas bubble and when it may be safe to travel again.
Why Is a Gas Bubble Used In Retinal Surgery?
Gas bubbles are commonly used in procedures to repair a retinal detachment or macular hole. During these procedures, such as a vitrectomy, a retinal surgeon injects a small bubble of gas into the eye. The bubble presses gently against the retina, holding it in place against the back wall of the eye while it heals. Over the following weeks, your eye gradually absorbs the gas and replaces it with natural fluid. Depending on the type of gas used, this process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months.
Why Can't You Fly With a Gas Bubble in Your Eye?
At ground level, the atmosphere exerts pressure on everything around us, including the gases inside the body. As altitude increases, atmospheric pressure decreases. Airplane cabins are pressurized to protect passengers from the much lower pressure at cruising altitude, but cabin pressure is still lower than what you experience at ground level.
Due to a principle known as Boyle’s law, when the pressure around you decreases, the gases in your body expand. Typically, this is not an issue. However, the eye is a small, enclosed space that cannot easily accommodate an increase in volume. If you fly with a gas bubble, the bubble can grow large enough to cut off circulation to the retina. Without adequate blood supply, the retina and surrounding tissue can become severely damaged, resulting in permanent vision loss.
When Is It Safe to Fly Again?
Having a gas bubble in your eye doesn't mean giving up air travel indefinitely. The restriction lasts only while gas remains inside the eye. Once your retina specialist confirms that the bubble has been fully absorbed and your recovery is progressing appropriately, they can let you know when it is safe to fly again.
There isn't one waiting period that applies to everyone. The time it takes for your gas bubble to dissolve will depend on the type of gas used for your surgery. For example, SF6 gas can take 10 to 14 days to dissipate, with travel potentially possible two to three weeks after surgery. C3F8 gas can take 6 to 8 weeks to dissolve, so patients may need to wait 8 to 12 weeks before flying. The type of gas your surgeon selects for the procedure will depend on the nature of your condition.
